FP&A Stories - Conclusion...FP&A remains human

Hello Reader 👋

Last week, I had the chance to go to Austin, TX to attend the AFP FP&A Forum 2025 and it was amazing.

But I also had the honour to present a topic that's hyper trendy these days: how to use AI.

And you know my game: Storytelling.

So I dived into the problems CFO see in our FP&A presentations and how we can deal with them with AI tools.

And that's what we're seeing this week.

So take a coffee, sit down and read FP&A Stories just like 24k other readers

🤠 FP&A Forum showed we are still relevant

Last week, I was in Austin, TX, for the FP&A Forum organised by the Association for Finance Professionals (AFP) and it was AMAZING at multiple levels.

First, I lived an incredible experience as it was the first time that I went to the US and....how can I say....it was very different from what I know: everything is huge!

I even saw a Rodeo Show, and they know what entertainment is

It's difficult to draw conclusions from a simple week but I felt more welcome than any of the countries I visited in the last 10 years.

And that's a bit the big conclusion I have from this trip: at a time when everything seems to go automated, how we behave to each other, how we collaborate and communicate with others and use our human skills is what will make the difference in the future!

My co-presenters at the forum seem to think the same

Win Monday

In his Keynote, Paul Esptein, Former NFL & NBA Exec, showed us the key differentiator in the teams he managed in the past was how people were ready to make decisions.

Not how they made decisions, but how they prepared their week to be ready to make them.

And it all starts on Monday, deciding what Decision will be the Most Valuable (MVD)

Why our Presentations Don't Work and how to Leverage AI to be More Present

I rarely speak about AI and for cause: my big topic is the most human behaviour that can be.

Communication, Storytelling, Engagement,...all these are behavioural skills which I preach since I started all that.

But the problem is: you weren't taught the structure, you weren't trained with the skills necessary and you don't have the time.

So, I showed how to leverage simple AI-Tools you already have to help you gain these and eventually become the human storyteller your company needs.

Will say more about that in the second section of this newsletter (👇)

Nobody Teaches You How to Behave when You Become a CFO

I already said it many times: I've never been a CFO and will probably never want to be one (I love what I do today too much).

But Wassia Kamon became one, and there were so many things she didn't think of.

  • You suddenly become the leader of your ex-peers
  • You start to feel alone, and it's never going to be the same again
  • You can't hesitate anymore in front of the others

So many things that you are never taught and that only a CFO could share with you.

What Marine Corps Think about Being a Leader

War is ugly, we agree.

In an ideal world, we wouldn't need armies, military force or any other power.

But there was something worth learning in Ryan McCool's keynote about what he learned during his Marine career, and that he could transpose to his FP&A career

  • Leave no man behind
  • No individual is more important than the group
  • Decisions are never easy but you have to make one
  • Never fall in love with your plan

So many golden nuggets and I was so captivated that I didn't write them all

Bottom Line: In the sea of AI and stuff, you are still relevant!

Don't think that you will be replaced by AI

We were 500 to discuss the future of FP&A

And the important of human skills has never been so important

  • Plan your mental to make decisions
  • Leverage AI to communicate and tell stories
  • Prepare your future position
  • Become a trustworthy leader

Yes, tons of tasks will be taken over by AI

But it's a good thing!!!

That will leave us space to become the best FP&A practicioners possible

Don't you agree? Let me know your thoughts

🤖 AI-Enhanced Storytelling

Last week’s session was supposed to be a one-shot.

But then came the feedback:

"Amazing presentation! Truly enjoyed the content!"
Rachel Foust, Senior Director @Verizon

"Amazing session on how to improve my FP&A storytelling! Can't wait to start using what I learned.“
Carey Vassallo, Director, R&D FP&A @SpringWorks Therapeutic
"Soufyan, your presentation on the impact of storytelling in FP&A presentations was so helpful. I cannot wait to start implementing your tools in my day to day. Thank you!”
Kelly Klinka, Director Corporate FP&A @SpringWorks Therapeutic

“Thanks for sharing your perspectives on this topic. Really love the AI demo you did in your presentation.”
Marcus Gadson, Senior Finance Director @WellPath

It confirmed something I’ve believed for a long time:

AI won’t replace the human part of storytelling.
But it can help you unlock it faster.

Because structure, clarity, rhythm… all of that can be trained.
Even better: supported by tools you already have.

That’s why I created a new 1-hour webinar for FP&A and finance teams.

It’s called AI-Enhanced Storytelling and it’s all about helping your team use AI to do what humans do best: connect, convince, and drive action.

It’s not a public session: It’s something I deliver directly to corporate teams, fast-paced, hands-on, and adapted to your level.

📩 Not the one booking trainings? Just forward this email and say

“Might be something for our next team meeting.”

If you’re the manager yourself, I’m one message away 😉

That's a wrap for this week

See you next week!

Hello Reader 👋 I am no CFO, never been one, and probably will never be. But believe me: when I was in a meeting room, there was not a single decision that was made without that people turned to me to have a sort of approval. Maybe they were afraid of me because I'm tall and bearded, but I prefer to think that I developed an aura that made me indispensable. It's not easy but there are behavioural tips that can make any FP&A pro as strong as a CFO. And that's what we are seeing today 👇 (That...

Hello Reader 👋 In the last weeks, we've seen how to build credibility without sounding like a know-it-all analyse your stakeholders to truly understand them negotiate to create a win-win situation That's good, but where is the finance part in all of this? Because unless you want to become a psychologist, you'll have to mix that personal approach with data. Learning how to influence with numbers without giving the impression that you're right (even if you are) is the most difficult thing I...

Hello Reader 👋 If you think negotiating is only for salespeople, you couldn't be more wrong. Every job has its part of negotiations and FP&A has a lot. Budgets. Forecasts. Business Cases. Assumptions. You'll have to deal with people wanting more (or less, depending on what) and try to stay on your grounds. But it's not so easy not to take it personally so you have to know what to do. This is what we're going to tackle today 👇 So take a coffee, sit down and read FP&A Stories just like 22k...
